On Friday, Kendrick Lamar released his third studio album, To Pimp a Butterfly.
Although it was a major achievement for the superstar, there was a huge amount of confusion surrounding the title.
“I’m not going to name my new album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly,'” he explained.
“That’s just not my thing.
I just wanna do it, but I’m not gonna name it.
It’s just a name for my music, so it’s a very nice name.”
He went on to say, “I feel like I’ve kind of done a little bit of research on the internet about this thing, and it’s like, ‘Yeah, it’s got a title.’
He then went on an extended rant about the meaning behind the title, calling it “a little bit ironic” that the rapper named the album after the name of a song.
“The title of my album is just, like, like the title of a poem,” he said.
“Like, it has the meaning of a little poem.
It has the lyrics of a piece of poetry, but it’s really just about the process of getting over a breakup.”
The title may not be as catchy as “The Pimp” or “Ain’t It Fun,” but it certainly makes the album sound like a different kind of album.
